U.S. SECRETARY of Energy Bill Richardson announces that researchers at the Department of Energy's Joint Genome Institute in Walnut Creek, California, have decoded in draft form the genetic information on human chromosomes 5, 16 and 19. Understanding the genetic information contained in human chromosomes 5, 16, and 19 could have significant medical implications. Chromosome 5, for example, contains genes that have been associated with several disorders, including Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, and colon cancer. The ability to study these genes in detail could lead to new insights into the causes of these diseases and potential treatments.
