The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) announces that it would be investigating concerns over the proposed merger between Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) and Colonial Ltd, a major Australian banking, insurance, and funds management company. The concerns were raised by the Tasmanian-state government, which argued that the merger could lead to reduced competition in the financial services market, particularly in the area of home loans. The government also expressed concerns about potential job losses in Tasmania as a result of the merger.
