Palestine and its supporters are seeking a vote on a revised resolution aimed at reducing violence in West Asia in the Security Council. However, they are apprehensive about the potential for the United States to veto the resolution. Diplomats have warned that a veto could exacerbate the violence that has already resulted in over 300 deaths, mostly Palestinians, since September, and potentially lead to further casualties. The new draft resolution, which has been proposed by Palestine and six developing countries that are members of the Security Council, omits the specific number of U.N. peacekeepers. In the previous version, 2,000 observers were called for to help address the violence in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
