Dr. Jean-Pierre Garnier is the "hands-down logical choice" to lead the newly merged SmithKline Beecham PLC and Glaxo Wellcome PLC, following the $75.7 billion deal that is expected to be unveiled the following day. According to people familiar with the negotiations, Dr. Garnier is instrumental in making the merger happen, and without him, the deal might not have come to fruition. The combined company, which is named GlaxoSmithKline, has a market capitalization of over $180 billion and was expected to lead the industry in areas such as research and development, manufacturing, and marketing.
