Dayton-Hudson is renamed the Target Corporation. Target had been introduced as a discount retail chain by Dayton-Hudson in the 1960s, and it had quickly gained a loyal following for its trendy merchandise, stylish store design, and low prices. By the late 1990s, Target had become the most successful of Dayton-Hudson's retail brands, and the company made the strategic decision to focus on expanding and building the Target brand. The name change to the Target Corporation is seen as a way to signal the company's commitment to its discount retail business and to create a stronger, more cohesive brand identity.
