After the administration of Ecuador president Jamil Mahuad announced its intention to adopt the U.S. dollar as the official currency of the country, protests have led to the 2000 Ecuadorian coup d'état with Mahuad's removal from office as the President of Ecuador and elevates Vice President Gustavo Noboa to the presidency.
