On January 19, 2000, the World Bank launches a new trading fund aimed at combatting carbon dioxide emissions. The fund, called the Prototype Carbon Fund, is designed to help industrialized countries meet their commitments under the Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Kyoto Protocol was adopted on December 11, 1997, and is not entered into force.
