A senior Iranian official stated that Tehran would view positively any effort made by New Delhi to join the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC). The visiting Deputy Foreign Minister of Iran, Mr. Mohsen Aminzadeh, responded to questions regarding India's possible entry into the OIC, stating that the organization must take note of India's substantial population following the Islamic faith. He further explained that there would need to be a consensus among OIC members for India to be admitted. It is expected that Pakistan may object to India's attempt to join the OIC, given that Islamabad had effectively blocked New Delhi's previous efforts to become a part of the organization during its inception in the late 1960s.
