Andrew J. Schindler, the chairman of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Holdings Inc., spoke out in defence of his company's business practices in a high-profile trial involving a class-action lawsuit against big U.S. tobacco companies filed by Florida residents with smoking-related illnesses. Schindler stated that his company had no reason to apologize for the way it sells its products and that it was doing the best it could.Schindler's remarks came at a time when the tobacco industry was facing increased public scrutiny and legal action due to the harmful effects of smoking on human health. The trial in which he was speaking was just one of many lawsuits filed against tobacco companies seeking compensation for the health problems caused by smoking.
