The United States and Russia agreed to destroy 34 tons of plutonium, enough to make 17,000 nuclear warheads. The agreement was reached by U.S. President Bill Clinton and Russian President Vladimir Putin at a summit in Moscow. The plutonium was left over from the Cold War arms race and was considered a security threat if it fell into the wrong hands. In addition to the plutonium deal, the two leaders also agreed to cooperate on missile defense technology. The United States agreed to share its early warning satellite technology with Russia to help detect missile launches in real-time. This was seen as a significant step towards easing tensions between the two countries and reducing the risk of a nuclear arms race.
