Mr. K Subrahmanyam, convener of the National Security Council Advisory Board, has made a bold statement suggesting that India should possess around 150 nuclear warheads, which can be delivered through missiles and bomber aircraft, in order to deter both China and Pakistan. He believes that such a high number of warheads would be necessary to provide adequate deterrence. Speaking on the weekly security and defense program "Tainaat" telecast by Doordarshan, Mr. Subrahmanyam argued that with India's military targets being within reach, any nuclear strike from Pakistan would result in devastating punishment, which they would not be able to afford.
