The U.S. State Department orders the closure of 37 Embassies and Consulates worldwide over the weekend. This decision is made in response to the ongoing investigation of the blast on the USS Cole at Aden, which resulted in the death of 17 sailors. The closure is also influenced by the unrest in the West Bank and Gaza. State Department spokesman, Mr. Richard Boucher, stated that "in light of the history of attacks, you have to be concerned of additional attacks." He further added that the U.S. government has sent messages to embassies worldwide to remain vigilant and keep in close touch with the American communities. Nonetheless, the closure of diplomatic premises was not an indication of Washington withdrawing in the face of terrorism.
