Fiji's Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama, announces the removal of the UK's Union Jack from the country's flag, calling for an end to colonial symbols. This decision reflects Fiji's desire to embrace its independent identity since gaining independence from Britain in 1970. New Zealand, which also features the Union Jack on its flag, plans to hold a referendum in 2016 to consider changing its own flag.
