Hawaii becomes the first U.S. state to raise the smoking age from 18 to 21, effective January 1, 2016. Additionally, the state will prohibit the sales, purchases, and use of electronic cigarettes for those under 21. This move aims to deter smoking initiation among young people and promote public health. Hawaii's decision sets a precedent for other states to consider similar measures to reduce tobacco-related harms.
