The National Diet of Japan votes to lower the voting age from 20 to 18, bringing about the most significant reform of the country's electoral laws in 70 years. This change aims to encourage greater political engagement among younger voters. The revision to the Public Offices Election Law unanimously passed both the Lower House and Upper House, making it highly likely to be in effect for the upcoming elections, allowing approximately 2.4 million 18- and 19-year-olds to join the electorate.
