The US Food and Drug Administration approves genetically modified potatoes and apples, stating their safety and nutritional equivalence to conventional varieties. The approved potatoes, developed by J. R. Simplot Co., are designed to resist bruising, while the apples from Okanagan Specialty Fruits Inc. have been engineered not to brown. This decision paves the way for these genetically modified foods to enter the market.
