São Tomé and Príncipe holds presidential elections, initially resulting in the victory of Evaristo Carvalho of the Independent Democratic Action party. However, the results are later annulled, leading to a second round between Carvalho and incumbent President Manuel Pinto da Costa. Pinto da Costa boycotts the second round, and Carvalho is ultimately elected unopposed, solidifying his position as the country's leader.
