Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is elected President of the Portuguese Republic in the 2016 presidential election. Supported by multiple parties, he secures 52% of the vote in the first round, succeeding President Aníbal Cavaco Silva, who was ineligible for a third consecutive term. Turnout, though higher than in 2011, reaches a record low for a presidential election without an incumbent.
