The newly expanded Panama Canal opens after a $4.5 billion expansion project. This project, known as the Third Set of Locks Project, doubles the capacity of the canal by adding new locks and widening and deepening existing channels. The expansion allows larger ships, referred to as New Panamax, to transit the canal, boosting global trade and maritime transportation efficiency. The expanded canal begins commercial operation, marking a major milestone in international shipping.
