The European Union pledges nearly $7 billion and other concessions to Turkey to assist in curbing the influx of migrants and addressing the large number of Syrians currently residing in the country. The implementation of the deal on asylum seekers begins with the transfer of the first group of migrants back to Turkey. The agreement aims to discourage refugees from using smugglers to reach nearby Greek islands and provides for a one-for-one arrangement in relocating Syrian refugees to EU countries.
