In Turkey, over 11,000 teachers are suspended for alleged links to the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) just before the start of the school year. Prime Minister Binali Yildirim suggests that up to 14,000 teachers may be associated with terrorist activities. Turkey and several Western countries consider the PKK a terrorist organization. The suspensions follow a larger purge of school workers and private teachers after a failed coup in July.
