Allergan announces its acquisition of Tobira Therapeutics, a biopharmaceutical company specializing in liver disease therapies. The deal, valued at up to $1.7 billion, focuses on treating nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), a liver disease associated with obesity and type-2 diabetes. NASH affects approximately 5% of the U.S. population and currently has no approved treatments. Allergan aims to address the growing prevalence of NASH, considering it a future epidemic-level chronic disease.
