Ottawa introduces legislation to legalize marijuana in Canada, making it the first large industrialized nation to regulate the sale and production of the drug. If approved, individuals aged 18 and older would be allowed to purchase cannabis from licensed producers and possess up to 30 grams in public. Selling or providing marijuana to individuals younger than 18 would carry severe penalties. The proposed legislation aims to establish a regulated framework for cannabis use.
