Air Berlin, Germany's second-largest airline, files for bankruptcy protection after its main shareholder, Etihad Airways, chooses not to provide further financial support. The airline has been burdened by debt for nearly a decade and reported a substantial loss in 2016. Flights will continue to operate temporarily with assistance from a transitional loan provided by the German government. Discussions are underway for Lufthansa to potentially acquire part of Air Berlin.
