In Puerto Rico, with a 23% turnout of eligible voters, 97% of the voters express their desire for the island to become a U.S. state. The referendum offered three options: statehood, independence/free association, or maintaining the current territorial status. The overwhelming support for statehood is attributed to a boycott led by the pro-status quo party, resulting in a 22.93% turnout. Puerto Rico has been a U.S. unincorporated territory since 1898.
