The journal Genes & Development publishes a study from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, shedding light on why hair turns gray and bald in a mouse-model study that could have implications for humans. Researchers identify the protein KROX20, which activates skin cells to become hair shafts and prompts the production of another protein called stem cell factor. In mice, these proteins play a role in baldness and graying.
