Abdullah of Pahang is elected as the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King) of Malaysia. This follows the unexpected resignation of Muhammad V of Kelantan, whose abdication was attributed to his failing health. The Royal Council passed a special amendment allowing his son, Abdullah, to succeed him as Sultan immediately and subsequently be elected as the next Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
