The United Kingdom misses the United Nations deadline to return control of the Chagos Archipelago to Mauritius. Mauritius accuses the UK of being an "illegal colonial occupier" after the UK refuses to recognize Mauritius' claim to sovereignty over the islands. The Chagos Islands, including Diego Garcia with a US military airbase, have been a subject of international dispute for several decades.
