Tongan Prime Minister ʻAkilisi Pōhiva passes away at the age of 78, one day after being taken to a hospital in New Zealand. Pohiva, a pro-democracy activist, served as the Prime Minister of Tonga from 2014 until his death. He was the first commoner elected to the position by Parliament rather than appointed by the King. Pohiva's government made controversial decisions during his tenure, including initially ratifying the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.
