A rare and thought-to-be-extinct wildflower, Gasteranthus extinctus, has been rediscovered in South America. The flower, last seen in 1985, was found in Ecuador's cloud forest during a research expedition in 2021. Initially believed to be facing extinction due to habitat loss, the rediscovery has brought elation. Researchers collected plant samples to confirm the DNA of the species, which was found in small patches of remaining forest. The flower symbolizes the uniqueness of these forests.
