According to the German environment ministry, a mysterious and highly toxic substance has been identified as the cause behind the extensive wildlife mortality in the Oder river. Additionally, elevated levels of mercury have been detected in the river. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has expressed that it will take several years for the river to recover and "return to normal" after this ecological disaster.
