Amgen Inc. has agreed to acquire Horizon Therapeutics PLC for $27.8 billion, as part of its strategy to offset the loss of patent protection on its key drugs. This deal reflects a trend among major pharmaceutical companies, such as Pfizer and Merck, to seek new revenue sources through acquisitions. While most previous deals have been smaller in scale, Amgen's purchase of Horizon is its largest to date. The acquisition would add Horizon's rare-disease drug portfolio, which is projected to generate substantial sales in the coming years.
