In January, deforestation reached a record high in Brazil, with an area of 430 square kilometres cleared, over seven times the size of Manhattan. Factors contributing to this include global demand for agricultural commodities like beef and soya beans, as well as an anticipated law to legitimize land grabbing. Environmentalists blame President Jair Bolsonaro for weakening protections and enabling the acceleration of deforestation. Despite promises made at CoP26 to halt and reverse deforestation by 2030, the situation in Brazil remains concerning.
