A molar tooth discovered in a French cave has provided the earliest evidence of Homo sapiens living in western Europe. The tooth, along with stone tools dating back approximately 54,000 years, indicates that early humans inhabited Europe 10,000 years earlier than previously believed. Remarkably, the Homo sapiens tooth was found among layers of Neanderthal remains, challenging the notion that the arrival of Homo sapiens caused the extinction of Neanderthals. This discovery suggests a more complex coexistence between the two human groups. The findings were published in the journal Science Advances.
