Child marriage was officially made illegal in the Philippines as a new law came into effect. The country has one of the highest rates of child marriages, with one in six girls getting married before the age of 18. The law, signed by President Rodrigo Duterte, imposes prison terms of up to 12 years for those involved in marrying or cohabiting with individuals under 18. However, certain provisions of the law have been temporarily suspended to allow for a transition period for communities where child marriage is prevalent.
