West African nations, represented by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), have decided to take strong action against Mali for delaying elections following a military coup in 2020. The bloc will close borders, sever diplomatic ties, and impose economic sanctions on Mali. ECOWAS finds the proposed timetable for elections in December 2025 instead of February 2022 unacceptable, stating that it will further entrench an illegitimate military transition government. The sanctions include border closures, financial transaction suspensions, asset freezes, and recalling ambassadors from Bamako.
