Roberta Metsola, a Maltese MEP, has assumed the role of acting President of the European Parliament, making her the first Maltese person to hold this position. Metsola, who was first elected as an MEP in 2013 and previously served as the First Vice-President of the European Parliament, was elected as President following the passing of David Sassoli. Her appointment also makes her the youngest President in history and the first female President since 2002.
