South Korea has surpassed one million cumulative COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic, with a record daily increase of 38,000 infections. Although the country initially managed to control the virus through aggressive tracking, tracing, masking, and quarantining without extensive lockdowns, the rapid spread of the Omicron variant has led to a surge in cases. South Korea was the first country outside of China to combat a significant outbreak.
