Iceland, one of the few remaining countries with commercial whaling, has announced its plan to cease whaling in 2024 due to declining demand for whale meat. The resumption of commercial whaling by Japan, Iceland's main market, and the increased costs associated with going further offshore for hunting have contributed to the decrease in demand. Fisheries Minister Svandis Svavarsdottir stated that there are limited justifications and economic advantages for continuing the whale hunt beyond 2024. Despite quotas, Icelandic whalers have been inactive in recent years.
