Six African countries, led by Zimbabwe, agree to resume trading in ivory due to the unsustainable growth of the elephant population. With an estimated 300,000 elephants in the KAZA area, these member states emphasize the need to address the concerns of countries with large elephant populations. The signatories aim to establish a new and improved approach to elephant conservation, tourism, and the well-being of rural communities in key African range states. They argue that overpopulation contributes to human-wildlife conflicts and ecological challenges.
