Delegates at a global wildlife summit have approved measures to protect 54 additional shark species, aiming to curb the lucrative and inhumane shark fin trade. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) will now tightly control the trade of requiem and hammerhead sharks. This historic decision, adopted by consensus, is expected to protect up to 90 percent of sharks in the market. The move reflects growing recognition of the vital role sharks play in maintaining ocean ecosystems and combatting their alarming population decline caused by overfishing.
