New Zealand is planning to introduce legislation that would require online platforms such as Google and Facebook to pay news publishers for the content shared on their platforms. The proposal, based on similar laws in Australia and Canada, aims to encourage voluntary agreements between digital platforms and local news outlets. However, if no agreement is reached, the law would establish a mandatory negotiating process. New Zealand Broadcasting Minister Willie Jackson highlighted the need for platforms to pay for news production and called for a fair arrangement.
