The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) becomes the first jurisdiction in Australia to decriminalize the possession of small quantities of illicit drugs, such as cocaine, amphetamines, and heroin. Instead of facing criminal prosecution, individuals caught with these drugs for personal use will be cautioned, fined, or referred to drug diversion programs. The ACT government emphasizes a harm-minimization approach and aims to reduce stigma, provide access to treatment and rehabilitation, and prioritize the wellbeing of drug users. The new laws will come into effect in October 2023 after a 12-month transition period. Critics argue against the move, citing concerns about increased crime and road safety.
