The U.S. government has sued California, claiming its egg and chicken regulations contributed to a national spike in egg prices, which hit $6.23 per dozen earlier this year amid a bird flu outbreak. The Department of Justice argues that California’s laws—AB 1437, Proposition 2, and Proposition 12—impose costly standards on out-of-state farmers, violating federal authority and disrupting national egg supply chains. The lawsuit seeks to restore uniform, federal oversight of egg production.
