The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics is awarded to John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret, and John M. Martinis for pioneering discoveries in macroscopic quantum mechanical tunneling and energy quantization in electric circuits. Their 1980s experiments with superconducting systems proved that electric currents could “tunnel” between states and exchange energy in discrete amounts, validating quantum theory. The Nobel Committee praised their work for deepening understanding of quantum behavior and underpinning today’s digital and computing technologies.
