The 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson, and Omar M. Yaghi for their groundbreaking work on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) — crystalline materials made by linking metal ions with organic molecules to form porous structures. These “molecular architectures” allow gases and chemicals to pass through, enabling applications such as carbon capture, pollution reduction, and chemical storage. Their discoveries, developed independently since the 1970s, have revolutionized materials chemistry and offer innovative ways to address climate and environmental challenges.
