Uruguay’s Senate has passed a landmark law decriminalizing euthanasia, making it the first country in predominantly Catholic Latin America to legalize the practice through legislation. The bill, approved by 20 of 31 senators after years of debate, allows terminally ill patients to seek medical assistance to end their lives. Colombia and Ecuador had previously decriminalized euthanasia via court rulings. Lawmakers hailed the move as a progressive milestone comparable to legalizing divorce and same-sex marriage.
