The Supreme Court of India orders nationwide protection for elephant corridors, ruling that no state or union territory can build or maintain physical blockades on traditional migration routes. The court says crop damage or property concerns cannot override elephants’ natural right of passage. It also bans cruel deterrents such as fireballs, burning torches, iron spikes, firearms, and “hulla parties.” India has about 22,446 wild Asian elephants across 150 recognised corridors. The court directs MoEFCC to conduct a fresh national survey and report illegal obstructions within eight weeks.
