Germany's Robert Koch Institute records an estimated 15,800 heat-related deaths between April 6 and August 16, 2026, the highest total since the Robert Koch Institute began weekly heat mortality monitoring. Four severe European heatwaves drive the surge, with temperatures repeatedly exceeding 40°C. The deadliest period comes in late June, when about 9,600 people die in one week, followed by another spike of around 4,000 deaths in early August. Elderly people are worst affected, especially those aged 85 and above, highlighting the growing public-health danger from extreme heat.
