The ILO adopts the Decent Work in the Platform Economy Convention, creating the first binding international labour rules for online gig and app-based workers. The treaty wins strong support in Geneva, though the United States and New Zealand vote against it, while India and the United Kingdom abstain. It aims to protect hundreds of millions of platform workers by guaranteeing fair pay, transparent digital wage records, human review of algorithmic penalties, the right to refuse dangerous work, and access to unions, collective bargaining, injury insurance, and sick leave.
